Grant Fisken - Betting Basics (but easily forgotten)

Everyone seems to be a sporting expert these days. With 24-hour rolling news, the deep black hole of the internet and more social media accounts than there are people (probably), it is possible to find endless amounts of results and statistics. This can be a double-edged sword when it comes to betting and your strategy, so how can you turn quantity of information into quality information.

betting guide

Have a plan and stick to it

Momentum is a great thing in the world of sport. It certainly played its part in Leicester City's end of season run that guided them to English Premier League safety, and it was certainly evident from Stan Wawrinka as he stormed back from a set down to beat Novak Djokovic in the French Open final. However when it comes to betting, momentum is a myth. If you have planned your bets for the day or for a tournament, stick to that strategy. If you have your pick all set for the 15:45 at Chepstow and end up with a couple of good wins in the earlier races, don’t change things up. The horses and jockeys have no idea you are on a "winning run", it really won't have an impact on the race. Likewise, if you had a couple of losses hold firm.

Stats, stats, stats

How many touches did Lionel Messi have with his right shin in his own penalty box in La Liga matches in November? I have no idea, but someone probably could tell you. This can be a danger when it comes to betting. Such in-depth statistics can tell you a lot, but it usually all boils down to three things – form, conditions and history. Form and history are obvious but conditions are one of those things that can throw up some interesting opportunities. As Wimbledon approaches look out for world number 35 Pablo Andujar. The Spaniard could sneak into the seedings depending on injuries and ranking changes, but has lost all five of his singles matches at the grass court major (the last two in straight sets).

Get creative

Gone are the days of home, away or draw when it comes to team sports. Margins, goals, points, handicaps, cards, you name it. The value can often be found away from the match result. The Euro 2016 qualifier between Ireland and Scotland on Saturday could be one of the tightest matches of the campaign, so good luck picking the outcome. Yet if you consider there has only been 11 goals in the last eight matches between the countries, then under 1.5 goals at around 6/4 may be worth a look.

Seek advice and branch out

What if there are some great bets waiting to be placed or good odds that have passed you by? Maybe you're not that familiar with a particular sport. Why not give one of the Bet Advisor tipsters a try, with nine sports featured. Kajus on basketball or Ibro on baseball could be your new wingman. Last, but by no means least, use your head not your heart. Try and keep bias and favouritism out of your strategy. I'm sure there would have been a Hibernian fan who had a shilling on his team retaining the football Scottish Cup in 1903. If he did that every year since his wait for a return would be 112 years, and counting.
