Today punters horse racing

Punters have been enjoying having a flutter on the horses since the 1700s, when King James I founded Newmarket race course. Since then, it has grown exponentially thanks to the rise in popularity of sports betting; which became legal in the UK and many parts of Europe in the 1900s.
Today punters enjoy racing across the globe, although the greatest interest is in meetings held in the UK, France and the USA. These are held most weekends, with the flat racing season running from March to November and the ever popular National Hunt campaign starting in November and running until May. [test dev]

The big races to look out for are the King George VI Chase (December), the Grand National (April), the Kentucky Derby (May), the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (October) and the Cheltenham Festival, which takes place in March and includes the Supreme Novices Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Gold Cup.
Punters will enjoy picking out the winner of a race, or will hedge their bets if they like the look of an outsider by betting each way. Many will include their selections into an accumulator such as a Yankee or Lucky 15, which has given rise to some incredible bets in the past; including a UK punter who won £1 million (€1.3 million) from a £1 bet!
