We turn to the Listed 888Sport Tapster Stakes at 2.20 for our first bet of the day. This doesn’t look the hottest event for the grade and could well be fought out between two Aiden O’Brien cast offs. The one eyed Eye Of The Storm will be making her debut for Amanda Perrett here and has a win at Group 3 level over this trip on her CV. If she runs up to that level here she could be tough to beat. Narrow preference though is for another ex O’Brien inmate, namely the David Simcock trained Felix Mendelssohn. A product of the successful Galileo-Danehill Dancer cross we backed him last time out and aren’t ready to give up on him just yet. He was no match for Agent Murphy at Ascot but was well supported in the market and can be expected to come on for what was his first run in seven months. Rawaki wasn’t knocked around in behind that day and looks a danger but Felix can fend them all off to land this prize.
Our second bet of the day comes in the fourth race on Goodwood’s card. The EBFstallions.comMaiden Fillies Stakes at 3:30. The obvious one here would look to be Richard Hannon’s Bournemouth Belle. She made a most encouraging debut when staying on into third over 5f at Windsor and this step up to 6f should see her in a better light. Her dam side pedigree suggests she will want further than this in time but sire Canford Cliffs managed to win over this trip as a two year old. One strong factor in her favour is her six rivals are all making their debut here. Racecourse experience can be particularly beneficial over these shorter trips, Bournemouth Belle can put that experience to good use and land this under Pat Dobbs. Funny Oyster shouldn’t be short of speed being by Dark Angel and can give the selection most to do.
For our final bet of the day comes in the closing EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies Stakes at 5.15 over seven furlongs. We have a little more experience on show here than in the earlier maiden on the card with Henry Candy’s Iconic being the only debutant in the field. He wouldn’t have to be anything special to take this but the progeny of his sire Kodiac do much better over the pure sprint trips of five and six furlongs. Both Candy and Hannon are double handed in this but we think they will both miss out to the Roger Varian trained Privileged. All at sea on her debut at Newbury, she improved markedly last time out at Lingfield. Enduring a nightmare passage courtesy of being stuck out wide for the duration of the race, she stayed on pleasingly in the closing stages to be only beaten just over three lengths into third. The penny seems to have dropped with this one and she shouldn’t experience much trouble in running in this small field. She’s the one to be on. Author: Paul Harisson
